A once in a lifetime opportunity, we were thrilled when we were contacted to work on one of Rudolph Schindler's iconic homes, the Lechner House. Schindler's designs have always inspired us as Los Angeles natives and it was an honor and a privilege to work with the current stewards, the supervising architect (Escher Gunewardena), and landscape architect (Terremoto) to stabilize the hillside and rebuild the exterior spaces of the house to reflect the design intent of the original Schindler home. Built in 1947 as a pioneering early work in the midcentury modern movement, the Lechner house stood on an unstable hillside which required nine caissons going 20-30 feet into the ground. The property also had an existing pool which had cracked under the weight of the moving hillside. Our team provided the necessary hillside supports to rebuild the pool and provide new outdoor areas to entertain and recreate for the owners. After our efforts, the owners are now able to fully utilize the exterior spaces (pool, patios, and gardens) and have sucessfully preserved the iconic house from future damages from hillside movment.
