Tragically, in January 2025, the Palisades Fire burned through parts of Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and adjacent areas. The blaze destroyed 6,837 structures (1,017 damaged), caused multiple fatalities, and became the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles city history. 

In the fire’s aftermath, city and county authorities moved quickly to clear debris, streamline permitting, and support rebuilding. As of late 2025, over 85 % of destroyed properties in Los Angeles were cleared of debris, and nearly 300 rebuilding plans in the Palisades were approved under new streamlined policies.

Mayor Karen Bass issued Emergency Executive Order No. 1 to expedite recovery in the Palisades area, waiving certain procedural requirements and encouraging faster rebuilds. Los Angeles also hosts One-Stop Permit Centers in fire-affected zones to assist property owners in navigating the recovery process, and rebuilding projects are being undertaken in phases as debris removal continues.



Because of evolving building code updates, fire safety standards are being integrated into new rebuilds. For instance, the California Fire Code was updated in July 2025, and the LA County Fire Code takes effect January 2026, requiring resilience in new construction in fire-prone zones.
